Of the 4 language learning skills - speaking, reading, writing, listening - the skill of listening is often neglected. It happens often where we learn vocabulary and grammar, and practice our reading, but when we go out into the real world, we find it difficult to understand what English speakers around us are saying. That’s because we haven’t taken the time to exercise our listening skills.
‘Pailin Abroad’ is a website to help you practice your English listening skills. You will follow Pailin, a 20-year old girl from Thailand, as she studies abroad in Los Angeles. Each lesson is a dialogue, ranging from absolute beginner to advanced levels. Each lesson focuses on a single topic, such as a grammar topic, or a useful word, or a common phrase.

What do you think your English listening level is? You can skim through the conversations to get an idea of what level is suitable for you. Then, try to listen to the lessons in chronological order, and join Pailin on her journey in the USA.
Listen to the conversation first without reading it. Try to see if you can understand what they are talking about. You can listen to the conversation at a slower speed. Try to answer the question that will follow each dialogue. Then, read the conversation to fully comprehend what the characters were talking about. Read and understand the information about the lesson’s topic. I recommend listening to the dialogue again afterwards, and try to see if you can hear the lesson’s topic more clearly in the conversation. After each lesson, there will be a short writing prompt. You can comment with your answer, and I will try to correct your sentences.
